A New Chapter: My Year Without Social Media

The Exposure Triangle: Photography, Parenting, and Pursuit of Adventure

Hello friends and fellow photography enthusiasts,

Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in both my personal and professional journey. After much reflection, I've decided to take a year-long hiatus from social media to reconnect with the core of what drew me to photography in the first place—the art, the craft, and the genuine human connections it fosters.

Why I'm Stepping Away

In a world where likes, algorithms, and the pressure to constantly produce content have become intertwined with creative expression, I found myself asking an important question: What would my photography look like if I created purely for the joy of it? What stories would I tell if I wasn't subconsciously framing them for an Instagram grid or a Facebook timeline?

Social media has been an incredible tool for building my photography business. I've met amazing clients, connected with fellow photographers, and found inspiration in countless ways. But like many creative professionals, I've also felt the weight of digital expectations—the nagging sense that I'm missing opportunities if I'm not constantly visible online.

Staying Connected in a More Intentional Way

While I'm excited about this digital detox, I didn't want to disappear entirely. This newsletter (and accompanying blog) will be my primary way of staying connected with you all. Consider it the antidote to the endless scroll—a curated, thoughtful space where I can share:

  • The stories behind my favorite recent photoshoots

  • Technical insights and creative approaches I'm exploring

  • Seasonal mini-session announcements (motherhood and family sessions will continue!)

  • Personal reflections on how this social media break is affecting my creative process

  • Little updates about what me and my family are up to

  • Recent adventures I’ve been on

  • And someday soon, content exclusively for mamas who want to take better photos of their babies on adventures!

What This Means for My Clients

Rest assured, my business remains fully operational! I'm still booking sessions, still delivering the same quality work, and still just as passionate about capturing your family's precious moments. The only difference is that I won't be sharing previews on Instagram or Facebook. Instead, I'll be featuring select stories here (with client permission, of course) and focusing on deeper storytelling rather than quick snapshots.

The Journey Ahead

I have no doubt this year will be filled with growth, challenges, and discoveries. I'm looking forward to shooting more film, experimenting with new techniques without the pressure of immediate sharing, and perhaps most importantly, being more present both behind the camera and with my own family.

As I navigate this new approach to my photography business, I'd love to have you along for the journey. This space will evolve as I do, and your feedback will be invaluable in shaping what it becomes.

If you know others who might enjoy these monthly dispatches from my camera to yours, please feel free to share this newsletter with them.

Until next month, may your focus be sharp and your adventures plentiful.

With gratitude,

Chelsea McDonnell
